Brought my father's Seiko in after it stopped taking a charge. Ahmad explained exactly what the coil reading was telling him before he touched anything else. The written record they sent with the piece showed every measurement — before and after. That kind of thing matters when you are keeping a watch for the next generation.

I was nervous about the dial restoration because a previous repairer had made things worse by cleaning too aggressively. Here they sent me a photograph of the sample panel first and waited for my response before continuing. The dial looks right for its age — not new. That was exactly what I wanted, and I was glad they asked rather than assumed.

The pocket watch had been sitting in my grandfather's drawer since the early 1980s. Missing the small detent spring and the bow was broken at the hinge. They fabricated the spring in the workshop rather than finding an approximation. The provenance sheet they included named every part made or replaced. I did not expect that level of care for a piece this old.

Straightforward to deal with. My Tissot quartz was skipping seconds and I assumed it needed a new battery. They found the coil resistance was slightly out of range, which a standard battery change would not have fixed on its own. Three days and it came back running correctly, with a pressure test result noted on the service sheet.

The five-week turnaround for the dial work was a bit longer than I had mentally prepared for. But the communication during that time was honest — they sent a photo at week three when there was a decision to make about one of the indices, and I appreciated being asked rather than presented with a fait accompli. The result was worth the wait.

I had brought the English pocket watch to two other workshops before. One said they could not source the parts. The other fitted something that did not match and adjusted the case to accommodate it. Fusee Atelier fabricated what was needed. It took twelve weeks but the piece is now running to its original specification. The written record they provided is more thorough than anything I expected.

02 — Case Studies

Documented work in more detail

Case 01  ·  Waltham 18-size fusee pocket watch  ·  Jun 2025 14 weeks

Challenge

Movement had not run since the 1970s. Three components in the fusee chain were missing, the escape wheel was damaged on two teeth, and the bow was separated from the pendant. Previous owner had attempted a repair that left the click spring re-bent rather than replaced.

Approach

Full disassembly. Escape wheel teeth dressed at the bench. Fusee chain links fabricated to match surviving originals. Click spring made new. Bow re-attached using a replacement hinge pin shaped to the original profile. Movement cleaned and rebuilt, regulation set over two weeks of running.

Outcome

Movement running to within ±30 seconds per day. Owner received a photographic record, a parts and provenance sheet listing each fabricated component, and a written note on which interventions are reversible for a later restorer.

"I did not expect it to run again. That it does — and that there is now a paper record of everything done to it — changes what I can pass on to my children."

Case 02  ·  Longines cal. 30L dress watch  ·  May 2025 5 weeks

Challenge

Dial had lifting lacquer at the 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock positions from storage in a humid environment. One index had partially detached. Owner specifically did not want the dial to appear restored — she wanted it to read correctly as a piece from the 1960s.

Approach

Lacquer stabilised with consolidant applied under magnification. Surface cleaned without abrading underlying print layer. Index reseated and secured. Lume on the remaining indices matched to existing tone — deliberately not restored to original brightness. Sample panel sent for approval before work continued.

Outcome

Dial stable and reading correctly. The age of the piece is visible and appropriate. Owner received the written decision record showing each approval stage and the choice made at each one.

"The photograph they sent mid-way was exactly what I needed to see before giving them the go-ahead. It is rare to be asked."
