03 — Why the Atelier

What sets the bench apart

Written at every step

Each programme produces a paper record of decisions, parts used, and measurements taken. You receive it with the piece.

Photo approval before action

For dial and conservation work, photographs accompany each decision point. No irreversible step proceeds without your acknowledgement.

In-house fabrication

Missing steel components for fusee and pocket watches are made in the workshop. We do not source generic replacements from stock catalogues.

Clear timelines, held

Each programme carries a stated bench duration. We communicate early if circumstances change — not at the collection date.

Reversibility as a principle

Conservation work documents which interventions can be undone by a later hand. Future restorers will have a clear record to work from.

Pressure-tested output

Quartz work includes pressure testing to the manufacturer's rated depth. Results are noted alongside the service record for your files.

04 — Enquire

Have a piece that needs attention?

Send a brief description and we will reply with questions — or a straightforward outline of what the work involves, and whether it falls within one of our programmes.

05 — Questions

Common questions about the bench

What does the written record include?
Each record lists the parts replaced or fabricated, measurements taken during the work (coil resistance, current draw, regulation figures), and notes on condition observed at disassembly. For dial and conservation jobs, it also contains the decisions made at each photo-approval stage and the owner's responses.
How do I submit a piece for assessment?
Contact us through the form below or by phone. Describe the piece briefly — maker, approximate age, and the behaviour that prompted the inquiry. We will respond with any clarifying questions and, if the work falls within our programmes, advise on the next step. Pieces are brought to the workshop by appointment.
Can you work on watches outside the three listed programmes?
The three programmes represent the work we take consistently. We occasionally accept related work — case polishing, crown replacement, movement cleaning — on a case-by-case basis, depending on bench capacity. Write to us and we will be direct about whether we can help.
What happens if a required part is no longer in production?
For pocket watch conservation, we fabricate missing steel components in the workshop. For quartz module work, we note the module reference and advise on availability. If a module is no longer available from any supply channel, we will tell you directly rather than substitute a different calibre without discussion.
Are the stated prices fixed or estimates?
The prices are the programme rates. Additional work identified during disassembly — for example, a damaged stem that was not visible externally — is discussed before it is carried out. Nothing is added to the final amount without a conversation first.
How long is the bench queue at present?
We work to stated programme durations: three working days for quartz renewal, four to six weeks for dial restoration, and ten to fourteen weeks for pocket watch conservation. Actual queue position varies. Contact us to discuss current availability before bringing a piece in.
